Shenandoah University Respiratory Care Program Director's Message

Shenandoah University Respiratory Care Program – I’m actually a graduate of Shenandoah University. And when I came here I knew I wanted to do something in the health professions; I wasn’t quite sure and I was exploring different areas and somebody suggested to me respiratory care.

I had the opportunity to shadow a respiratory therapist in the hospital and I knew, after spending a few hours with her, that that’s what I wanted to do.

Respiratory care is a profession not many people know what we do or have even heard of it, unless they’ve had breathing problems themselves, or have had a loved one, but, it’s exciting, it’s fast-paced, it’s very rewarding to be able to go home at the end of the day and know that you helped somebody
breathe better.

We also see patients from the first breath of life as a newborn, all the way through geriatrics, to the last breath. So, we work in all areas of the hospital. The Division of Respiratory Care here at Shenandoah University is a bachelor-level program, and we offer a program both in Winchester and at our Northern Virginia campus in Leesburg, in Loudoun County.

And we use video conferencing technology to be able to do that. So we have faculty presence at both campuses and our students get to interact with each other The students from both campuses.

Our students have the opportunities to mirror what they learn in the classroom and practice that in a laboratory setting with equipment and mannequins.

In clinicals, they will have the opportunity to do different specialization rotations in pulmonary rehab, pulmonary diagnostics, in a NICU setting; so we try to give them that variety and really pride ourselves on they have top-notch hospitals that they’re able to go in this area — from Valley Health, here in Winchester, to Inova out in Northern Virginia, Reston Hospital Center, Children’s National Medical Center, Virginia Hospital Center.

So they are really exposed to a variety of settings, from a small hospital setting to a large, teaching institution, to be able to decide what they like and where their interests lie.

Soon, hospitals are going to require their therapists to have a bachelor’s degree. In order to be able to do certain procedures, to be able to work in a critical care arena; so our students, our alumni, are at an advantage having that preparation and having that degree.

I think at Shenandoah, we have a big advantage of having the other programs in the School of Health Professions, the School of Nursing, the School of Pharmacy. Our students have the opportunity, several times, throughout the program, to participate in interprofessional education events, and what we’ve found is, they, learning beside students of other disciplines, they’re able to not only learn about the other disciplines and their role in health care delivery, but also they’re able to educate those students as to what a respiratory therapist does.

With Shenandoah being a private institution, our class sizes are smaller, so that gives faculty the advantage – we get to know our students well.

For students who are looking into respiratory programs and are considering Shenandoah, that preparation in their prerequisites, the sciences are very important, and I actually look heavily at their science GPA; it’s the best predictor of whether they’re going to be successful in this program or not.

This program prepares individuals to be professionals, to be professional respiratory care practitioners, and that’s how we treat our students and hold the bar. We expect them to behave professionally, to be on time, to be present and we’ve found that that prepares them better for the work force.
